DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will establish what constitutes childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and the elderly stages of life, as well as the main tasks attached to all. It will give a general introduction to the main theories of development in these life stages. It will introduce the student to the development of the self and gender; to life-long personality issues; to social and sexual development; to cognitive development and wisdom; to moral development; and to ecological issues. All this will be linked to issues which social workers will encounter in their daily practice. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to explore life-long developmental issues, concepts, and constructs in the field of developmental psychology, utilising theory and practical examples to support understanding and application to the field of social work. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the developmental periods across the life-span and the main tasks of each period; - Describe the main theories associated with developmental psychology in general; - Highlight developmental theories across the different domains of human functioning; - Adopt a biopsychosocial and ecological perspective to understanding development. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply developmental theories to social work practice; - Employ different theories to specific populations; - Critically evaluate the presenting context to understand which theory best applies to the presenting difficulty.
