DESCRIPTION Health psychologists work with individuals suffering from different health problems. Health settings may include but are not limited to the general hospital, emergency service, psychiatric hospitals, rehabilitation, addiction or community services. This study-unit will explore issues specifically related to the delivery of behavior change interventions, with the aim of fostering health and improving the quality of life of clients.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit is aimed at developing critical awareness of the contribution of different theoretical models of health behaviour and illness to the study of health psychology interventions. It will equip students with the practical skills needed to foster behaviour change on a community level and when working with individuals.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate current theory and research on the context and key perspectives in health psychology interventions;
- Describe and evaluate theory and research on the biological mechanisms of health and disease;
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of evidence-based approaches to health behaviour change;
- Use different health psychology skills to foster behaviour change.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Select appropriate health psychology models and interventions to promote health and foster behaviour change on a primary, secondary and tertiary level in different health settings including health promotion, mental health setting and general hospital;
- Interventions will include smoking cessation, motivation interviewing, working with individuals with post-traumatic stress, psychosomatic symptoms and those who have endured trauma. Students will also be equipped with basic crisis management skills needed in a hospital emergency setting.
