DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces graduate radiographers from non-EU/EEA countries to various subject areas and develop their skills in areas that are essential to radiography practice. The topics to be covered in this study-unit, include:

Patient care in medical imaging;
Communication skills;
Ethical and professional code of conduct;
Counselling, compassionate and empathic care
Behavioural sceince within the context of healthcare
Research and evidence-based radiography practice

This study-unit also combines theory with practice in caring, communicating and counselling patients. This study-unit is meant for gradate radiographers from non-EU/EEA countries to be aware of important psychological and ethical aspects that are relevant to the local radiography profession.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To make candidates aware of core principles necessary to become caring professionals who treat their patients holistically through understanding, respect and support;
- To enable the candidates to understand the value of cooperating and communicating with patients and other health carers in the effective delivery of health care;
- To provide candidates with insights into the holistic approach expected in modern health care;
- To outline ethical issues, professional issues and codes of conduct as related to radiographers;
- To provide knowledge regarding preventive healthcare screening and health promotion; and
- To provide knowledge and understanding about occupational health and safety issues for healthcare professionals.
- To explain the importance of research and evidence-based practice within radiography

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the role of the radiographer within the health care team in the delivery of patient care;
- Participate in the delivery of care in a medical imaging department and ward situations;
- Illustrate how to work as a valued member of the multidisciplinary health care team;
- Identify and explain the principles of infections control including maintenance of general hygiene;
- Effectively communicate and counsel patients;
- Effectively communicate and cooperate with other members of the health care team;
- Discuss ethical principles and issues related to radiography;
- Describe the research process and application of evidence-based practice;
- Discuss the effectiveness of preventive healthcare, health screening and health promotion

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate different aspects of patient care in practice;
- Monitor patient parameters: temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and identify significant deviations from normal and report this to qualified staff;
- Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives;
- Attend to the needs of the patients;
- Identify important factors which contribute towards good team work in the care setting;
- Practice within ethical and professional boundaries;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the research process and evidence-based practice;
