Study-Unit Description

CODE RAD5239

TITLE Theory and Practice: Gynaecological Ultrasound

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Radiography

DESCRIPTION In this study-unit students will learn and develop the underpinning academic knowledge and clinical skills needed to undertake a range of gynaecological ultrasound examinations.

Students will develop the knowledge, understanding and ability to perform, interpret and report on diagnostic gynaecological ultrasound examinations in a competent and professional manner and be able to respond to changes in working practice and apply new techniques after critically evaluating them. Students will develop the skills to be able to critically review management options for a range of common pathologies.

The study-unit will develop the role of HCP by encouraging the skills of reflection and analysis so that they may critically appraise current practice, propose and develop improvements in practice and as a result improve current practices in the delivery of care to patient and the effectiveness of an ultrasound department.

Study-unit Aims:

On completion of this study-unit students will have the knowledge and skill to perform, interpret and report gynaecological ultrasound examinations. It aims to equip participants with a level of competence in ultrasound scanning that will enable them to understand the indications for ultrasound examinations, perform scans safely and competently, report on scan findings in the clinical context and know when to refer patients for a detailed assessment. It will also provide students with the required knowledge to be competent in selecting appropriate equipment parameters to optimise image acquisition and record optimal representative images. This study-unit provides both theoretical and practical training, with a significant emphasis on clinical experience.

The areas dealt with in this study-unit will include:

- Gynaecological ultrasound protocols, patient consent, chaperoning, intimate examinations;
- Ultrasound techniques; transabdominal, transvaginal, 2D/3D and introduction to renal US techniques;
- Normal ultrasound appearance on the non pregnant female pelvis;
- Abdominal ultrasound appearances;
- The role of ultrasound in gynaecological screening;
- The role of ultrasound in post-menopausal bleeding;
- Alternative imaging modalities - CT/MRI;
- The use of ultrasound in reproductive medicine;
- Ultrasound related appearances with pharmacological agents and contraceptive devices;
- The application of ultrasound contrast media in gynaecology;
- The use of ultrasound in fast tract gynaecology cancer management;
- Clinical management of gynaecological disease.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• demonstrate the ability to perform competently and professionally all gynaecological ultrasound examinations;
• demonstrate in-depth specialist knowledge of techniques relevant to the discipline;
• evaluate current issues in practice;
• demonstrate awareness of the patient’s needs both physically and psychologically for provision of satisfactory care of the patient/client;
• assess, interpret and evaluate gynaecological ultrasound images and formulate a report;
• demonstrate a knowledge of both the normal and abnormal gynaecological ultrasound appearances;
• be conversant with the application of interventional gynaecological ultrasound techniques;
• reflect critically upon the practice and the role of medical ultrasound in the management of the gynaecology patient;
• be aware of and critically appraise current literature/research studies for gynaecological ultrasound and related topics, incorporating evidence based practice.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• competently perform ultrasound examinations;
• have specialist knowledge of relevant techniques;
• assess patient’s needs both physically and psychologically;
• write reports;
• recognise both the normal and abnormal appearances;
• critically reflect upon the practice and the role of medical ultrasound;
• demonstrate effective decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;
• appraise current literature/research studies, incorporating evidence based practice.
