DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides HCP with the opportunity to develop clinical and academic knowledge of ultrasound and its role in the management of patients. It provides the students with the necessary skills to understand the indications of the various imaging examinations, perform scans and image safely and competently and report relevant findings in the clinical context. It also helps the HCP to understand when to refer patients for a more detailed assessment. This study-unit will also introduce the principles of management to participants working in the healthcare environment. The unit will enable students to develop a critical understanding of how practitioners may be decisive leaders in effective healthcare systems. The aim of the study-unit is to provide a high level of clinical expertise and students will gain their clinical experience in an approved centre. Students will be assessed on their clinical competence at the end of study-unit. Study-Unit Aims: - This unit provides the HCP with the opportunity to develop clinical and academic knowledge of various imaging modalities and their different roles in the management of patients while becoming safe and effective practitioners. - To develop the student’s investigative and analytical skills so they are able to critically evaluate material from a variety of sources and make safe clinical decisions. - To provide students with a high standard of clinical experience in imaging practice. - To enable the student to become highly competent in understanding the relevance of the acquired diagnostic information. - To enable the student to be competent in the dissemination of the acquired diagnostic information to the appropriate referrer/s involved in the clinical management of the patient. - To further develop and enhance the student's interpersonal skills so that s/he becomes a highly effective communicator able to provide a high standard of patient care. - To develop the student's administrative and management skills. - To develop the student’s ability to synthesise, appraise and critically evaluate research relevant to advanced imaging practice. - To investigate and analyse quality management issues and suggest practical solutions. - To critically evaluate the rationale underlying excellent management practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically appraise an individual’s clinical need when performing an ob/gyn extended ultrasound examination secondary to complex female pelvic pathology; - Acquire, interpret and disseminate relevant diagnostic information; - Critically evaluate clinical and other relevant information to determine when additional examinations / procedures are required; - Assess and respond to an individual’s physical and psychological care needs during the examination. - Appreciate the various practices relevant for effective management in a multidisciplinary setting. - Consolidate the concepts and techniques of management and leadership in a rapidly changing health environment. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate an in-depth, specialist knowledge of normal and abnormal ultrasound appearances and techniques relevant to the region being scanned. - Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of advanced imaging practice. - Critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and evidence based practice relating to imaging. - Take a proactive, self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others. - Demonstrate effective decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations. - Reflect critically on practice and the role of imaging in the management of the patient with medical abnormalities. - Demonstrate analytical skills for investigating and analysing quality management issues and suggest practical solutions. - Evaluate critically the rationale underlying leadership practice.
