DESCRIPTION This study-unit is structured to offer a rich understanding of the historical roots of agriculture in Malta. The content will be organized as follows:

- History of Agriculture in Malta: Development of Farming Settlements exploring the historical progression of farming communities in Malta; Current Agricultural Legislation discussing present-day agricultural laws and their historical origins; Rural Traditions exploring the traditional practices and customs embedded in Maltese agriculture.

- Principles of Extension Service: Organization of Extension Service discussing the structure and framework of agricultural extension services; Purpose and Role examining the objectives and functions of extension services in the agricultural context; Expected Results discussing the anticipated outcomes and impact of extension services on the agricultural sector.

Study-Unit Aims:

To show how Maltese rural society is organized and has developed through the years and to discuss the best ways of reaching the farming community through an extension service

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

- recall the importance of historical information to establish agricultural practices;
- quote and interpret legislation related to agriculture;
- establish a link between traditional practices and artisanal products;
- describe traditions within the rural communities;
- recognize the importance of the extension service.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate how to extract historical information for articles and old texts;
- apply legal aspects to determine the right conditions for the agricultural system at hand;
- demonstrate how traditional techniques and equipment are nowadays replaced by more modern and hygienic equipment;
- distinguish between different extension services, with a special reference to strengths and weaknesses.
