TITLE Anatomy and Physiology of Farm Animals

UM LEVEL 00 - Mod Pre-Tert, Foundation, Proficiency & DegreePlus

MQF LEVEL 4

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Rural Sciences and Food Systems

DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on animals, particularly those related to agriculture. This unit comprises of the following:

- External morphology of farm animals: morphology of individual organs; diversity of organs between animals, e.g. monogastric, ruminant, etc,
- The anatomy and physiology of the following systems: respiratory, circulatory, gastrointestinal, nervous, endocrine, renal, muscular and skeletal systems; Immunity and the homeostatic control of the major body systems of farm animals.

Study-Unit Aims:

To present to students the basics of farm animal anatomy and physiology.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe the different external and internal structures of animals;
- match the diet of an animal with the anatomical features of the animal;
- explain the importance of the different organs;
- describe the main effects of environmental parameters on animals;
- explain the different requirements of different farm animals.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- examine an animal for its characteristics;
- demonstrate the functions of the different organs;
- explain how animals respond to external stimuli;
- identify the requirements of animals in housed structures, according to the animals’ characteristics.
