DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces the basic principles of image acquisition technologies and the practical skills to use these technologies. The unit also provides the theoretical foundations of image analysis and computer vision and provides the skills to choose both the necessary equipment and also the image analysis and computer vision algorithms for practical applications. Study-unit Aims: • To provide the theoretical principles underlying image acquisition technologies and practical skills to use these technologies. • To provide the theoretical foundations of image analysis and computer vision. • To provide the skills to choose the necessary image analysis and computer vision algorithms in the light of practical applications. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • During practicals & exam: Describe the principles of image acquisition technologies. • Given 2 image acquisition devices, analyse their performance. • Compare digital images to time-sampled signals, citing examples of similarity and difference. • Explain the principles of Intensity transformations, Spatial filtering, Frequency domain filtering, Basic morphological image processing, Image segmentation & element representation in digital imaging. • Given an imaging problem, perform the necessary calculations to solve it (as above) and write the algorithmic steps. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Given an image analysis application during practical sessions and final exam; • Select the appropriate image acquisition devices; • Configure selected image acquisition devices as appropriate for the application; • Select the necessary image pre-processing algorithms; • Select the appropriate image analysis and computer vision algorithms as appropriate for the application; • Program image analysis and computer vision algorithms to meet the requirements of the application.
