| DESCRIPTION | After a brief overview of the languages of the Bible (within the context of the Ancient Near East) and the development of Biblical Hebrew over the centuries, the study-unit commences right from the alphabet and proceeds to tackle the basic concepts of the language. A significant deal of vocabulary is covered in order to provide the student with the building blocks necessary. The basics of syntax and morphology are covered and students start familiarising themselves with simple Hebrew phrases or sentences even from Scripture. Study-Unit Aims: This study unit introduces students to the linguistic world of the Ancient Near East and zooms in immediately into Biblical Hebrew. It offers a basic knowledge of the language such that students will become acquainted with it and prepared for the next level of Hebrew, namely the study-unit entitled Biblical Hebrew - Intermediate. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - memorise a number of words from a vocabulary list; - define the meaning of certain linguistic features of words or phrases; - distinguish between different components of a sentence; - identify and use the basic Hebrew terminology adopted in theological studies. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - read texts in Hebrew with a basic level of understanding; - analyse the morphology of words; - dissect simple sentences on the basis of their syntax; - translate simple phrases and sentences; Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Main Texts: - Van Pelt, Miles V., and Gary Davis Pratico.
