| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit builds upon an introductory study-unit and takes students to a deeper level in their understanding of linguistic phenomena in Biblical Hebrew. It presents the complex system of the Hebrew verbal system and other related grammatical and syntactical features of the language whilst building a more robust vocabulary. Various short passages from Scripture will be utilised in order to explain and buttress the more technical linguistic rules and principles learnt in class. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims at covering all the principal elements of Biblical Hebrew in order to complete the knowledge attained in the introductory study-unit. It will also seek to familiarise students with the Biblical text and gradually show how the linguistic phenomena studied come to life when engaging with the Hebrew Bible in its original language. To this end, short reading sessions will be held, including parsing exercises in order to ascertain that students have grasped the function and meaning of words. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - memorise a broad amount of lexemes; - identify the root of verbal forms; - recognise the difference between the various verbal stems; - explain the relationship of words within a sentence. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - compose short phrases in Hebrew; - parse words by breaking them up into their various elements; - inspect the function of a word within a sentence; - translate complex sentences found in Scripture; Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Main Texts: - Anderson, Joseph, and Linda Motzkin.
