TITLE Biblical History, Geography and Environment

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Sacred Scripture, Hebrew and Greek

DESCRIPTION This introductory study-unit seeks to assist students in their understanding of the Biblical Books of Sacred Scripture in their diverse historical, geographical and existential context and background. A historical geography of the land of the Bible will be presented, bringing together research and archaeological exploration that has been done as regards the biblical land and its environs for its earliest beginnings to the onset of the New Testament period.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of this study-unit is to help under-graduate students understand the historical-geography of the land of the Bible, presenting the appropriate instruments for a critical understanding of this land of contrasts and for a more concrete understanding of the historical and geographical context of the different Books of the Bible. It will guide students to understand better that the Bible is fruit of a long and turbulent history rooted in a monotheistic faith experience coloured by individual and collective expectancy.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the existential background of each one of the Books of the Bible;
- Delineate the general historical-geographical development as indicated in the historical-theological narratives of the Biblical Books, both in the Old and New Testaments.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Read critically historical-geographical maps of the Bible;
- Interpret the theological significance given to specific places and area in the Bible as well as to specific historical milestones of Biblical History.
