| DESCRIPTION | Old Testament theology is a segment of the larger enterprise of Biblical theology. This study-unit will present the main currents of Old Testament theological thought. It will focus on the division of the Hebrew Canon and the theology that this division communicates, namely, the Torah, as the fullness of revelation, the Prophetic writings, as the application of the Torah, and the writings as a meditation on the Torah. Through this understanding the students will be introduced to the major theological themes that compose the theology of the Hebrew Scriptures which forms the foundation for the New Testament. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims at equipping students with the skill required to identify the fundamental texts within the Old Testament that enable one to formulate a basic theology for each writing within the Old Testament. This study-unit will also enable the students to identify the salient points of Jewish theology that form the foundations on which the New Testament theology continues to build. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify the major theological themes and their purpose within the Old Testament; - discuss God's nature as it is presented in the Old Testament; - grasp the history of Israel as the background of the New Testament; - appreciate the place and the role of the Old Testament as Scripture in the life of the Church. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - explain how texts from the Old Testament inform theological discussion; - describe how Biblical texts have been used as a direct source to the study of theology; - offer an independent and critical analysis of the Old Testament texts in relation to theological issues. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - BRUEGGEMANN WALTER, Old Testament Theology: An Introduction (Library of Biblical Theology), 2008. - Routledge, Robin, Old Testament Theology: A Thematic Approach. InterVarsity, 2013. - WALTKE BRUCE K., An Old Testament Theology: An Exegetical, Canonical, and Thematic Approach, Zondervan, 2007. |
