DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to introduce students more deeply into the Gospel of Mark and try to understand the author's literary artistry rooted in the vivid and detailed narratives, the rapid movements and the changes of scene and the different narrative patterns employed. Students will be able to discover the richness of this Gospel considered by many as being the earliest and the closest to eyewitness recollections of Jesus' earthly ministry.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to help under graduate students to understand better Mark's narrative Christology, the "Messianic Secret" and the names and Titles of Jesus that motivated Mark in proclaiming in writing the Good News of the Gospel. The study-unit will concentrate of chosen particular Marcan texts, especially the Passion Narrative, whose exegesis will enhance this understanding.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Read and interpret the Gospel of Mark as a comprehensive literary and theological work;
- Understand chosen texts as being narratives to be understood in the wider context of the Gospel; this especially as regards the Passion Narrative;
- Identify the traits that make the Gospel of Mark a comprehensive literary and theological work;
- Describe the different narrative patterns employed;
- Demonstrate the links between specific pericopes and the larger framework of the Gospel;
- Interpret the Passion narrative as a climax of the Gospel.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- take in hand Mark's Gospel and discern its importance for the reading and understanding of the other two Synoptic Gospels, i.e. Matthew and Luke;
- Read Marcan texts in a critical and analytical way to understand the basic message of the evangelist and the themes considered as pivotal in the understanding of Jesus and his mission;
- Appraise the Gospel of Mark in relation to the other two synoptic Gospels, namely Matthew and Luke;
- Critically assess the basic message of the evangelist;
- Critique the themes considered as pivotal in understanding Jesus and his mission;
- Formulate a clear Marcan Christology.
