DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to guide students in the final year of the course in their quest for a comprehensive and integrated approach to the deeper underpinnings of biblical studies. The focus of this synoptic study-unit is mainly the more exegetical aspects of the Bible as analysed through the original languages of Hebrew and Greek. Students will be able to employ the various methods and approaches to analyse texts, paying attention to the different types of genres, the dating of texts, and Biblical contexts. They will learn to apprecaite the difference between the author's intentions and later contemporary readings made possible through the application of different questions to the texts.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at aiding students to arrive at a more thorough and careful analysis of Biblical texts through an appreciation of the different methods, approaches, and exegetical tools available to the Biblical scholar.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- read and understand a Biblical text in its original languages;
- break up a text into different pericopes or sections;
- distinguish between the author's intentions and other possible readings of a text;
- comment on the general setting and meaning of a text;
- articulate the main theological notions behind redactors' choices.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- apply the historical-critical method to Scriptural texts;
- judge the reasons behind the author's choices;
- illustrate how different approaches would render different readings of a text;
- rate the validity of certain Biblical translations;
- debate on the tension between a literal/fundamentalist reading of the Bible and a non-fundamentalist approach.
