| DESCRIPTION | The writing and successful submission of a dissertation forms part of the final stages of the learning process offered by this B.A. (Hons) in Scripture Studies. The main objective of the dissertation is to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to plan, structure and write a coherent independent study on an aspect of Scripture of their own choice. Students will be able to explore a specific area of particular interest and to develop further their skills of individual research and critical analysis. In-depth engagement with a Biblical topic and sustained reflective writing is thus also expected from students. The individual student chooses a topic and a tutor, which s/he proposes to the Faculty Board for approval. Under the guidance of the tutor, the student will write a dissertation in which s/he develops this theme. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of the dissertation is to help students learn how to delve deeply into a particular topic, applying critical methods and approaches for the analysis of Scripture, and to present their findings in an orderly and rational manner. It also affords them the possibility to learn how to structure their arguments in a coherent manner whilst engaging with primary and secondary sources. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - determine the best sources for doing research in a particular area; - present a clearly structured argument; - summarise the ideas of various scholars on a particular topic; - highlight the most essential secondary sources for the analysis of a Scriptural text; - categorise themes according to their relevance for a dissertation. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - formulate a clear research question; - analyse Scriptural texts with the necessary hermeneutical tools; - defend a particular stance taken with regards to the interpretation of Scripture; - compare and contrast different scholarly positions to select the most pertinent; - compose a long essay that addresses a well-formulated research question. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: This is chosen by the student according to his/her topic with the help of his/her tutor. |
