DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to assist students in their quest for a comprehensive and integrated approach to text of the Gospel of John. Students will be able to discover the different layers of tradition behind this gospel and appreciate the same text in its final form. This exercise will help the student to appreciate both the diachronic and the synchronic approach to exegesis.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of this study-unit is to help under-graduate students to probe into the main theological themes and issues raised by the Gospel of John. Students will be aware of the history behind the text that reflects the history of the community to whom this gospel was originally written. This will help the students to be more critical and analytical in studying the text of this gospel as it stands.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Possess a measure of understanding of the Gospel of John and its relation to the Synoptic Gospels;
- Investigate the interplay between theology and symbolism;
- Outline the basic structure of the Gospel of John.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Research and use different Commentaries on the Gospel of John;
- Analyze and critically appraise different contexts behind the Gospel of John.
