DESCRIPTION | Directed Studies in Spanish and Latin American Studies will provide students the essential theory and guidelines for the completion of the dissertation in the MA (by Research) in Spanish and Latin American Studies. This study-unit will provide: - an insight into academic writing; - a detailed overview of current critical issues in Spanish and Latin American studies; - critical theory pertaining to the student’s chosen area of research. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to provide students with the theory knowledge and academic guidance leading to the completion of their 80-ECTS dissertation. On this account, the aims of this study-unit are: - to discuss the main current directions of research in the field of Spanish and Latin American Studies; - to provide the theoretical basis for academic writing; - to cover issues related to the structure and presentation of the dissertation. - to guide students in the planning of future research and in the application of their research skills in the job market. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Engage with complex critical issues in the subject area of Spanish and/or Latin American Studies, and particularly of specific periods in the histories of one or more Hispanic countries. - Undertake original research in the subject area of Spanish and Latin American Studies, leading to original contributions to the field. - Appraise and evaluate critically cultural questions in the Hispanic world and in Hispanic Studies. - Apply a range of theories, concepts and ideas to their research. - Appreciate, explain and discuss a range of aspects related to foreign cultures. - Plan and undertake independent research (developing specialised practices in order to identify research problems and to conduct original research). - Gather information, develop critical awareness, and evaluate that information critically. - Present arguments -- verbally and in writing -- that are well-written or articulated, clearly expressed, coherently organised, and properly supported with evidence. - Engage with complex scholarly questions and formulate independent hypothesis and theses about them. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Appraise problems in scholarly and other professional contexts, and conduct research to evaluate them. Critique, explain and discuss complex theories. - Undertake exhaustive research using a range of sources. - Work independently to produce reports and analyses. - Work in intercultural settings.
