DESCRIPTION The study-unit is based on an intensive programme of reading and research which is related to the student's specific field of interest within the field of Social Impact Assessment.

The study-unit is conducted on an individual basis. Empirical research will be carried out under supervision of an academic member of staff appointed by the Board of Studies. A dissertation of approx 15,000 - 20 000 words will be submitted for examination and presented orally to a group symposium.

Study-Unit Aims:

- The project will give the student the opportunity to engage with a topic of their choice and to carry out empirical research related to the field of Social Impact Assessment;
- It will enable students to put into practice the methodology, research design, research methods and analysis skills gained during the programme;
- It will augment students' confidence in writing a critical and synthetic review of the literature and give them the opportunity to develop theoretically informed analysis of empirical data.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- design a scientifically sound / qualitatively valid research project within accepted ethical frameworks;
- carry out fieldwork, gather and analyse data;
- write with expertise on the topic under scrutiny applying critical skills and drawing widely on the empirical and theoretical literature.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- compile the social baseline information of a project under analysis;
- write a social profile based of a project under analysis;
- consider indicative social indicators for monitoring the project under analysis;
- write complex analytical pieces of work more clearly, succinctly, and coherently;
- tackle successfully methodological, analytical, and practical problems involved in research and writing;
- present their research findings and defend their own analytical standpoints orally.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

The aim of the dissertation is to give student the opportunity to conduct individualized research under the supervision of a specialist in the field. The readings will therefore be determined by the subject or theme under investigation and a reading list will be provided.
