DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will focus on report writing and the proper use of the capabilities of modern word processing packages in the creation of templates and styles for the efficient preparation of both academic papers and professional reports. It will also involve the design of layouts which would be appropriate for specific types of academic papers or professional reports. Students will be trained to design templates and character, paragraph, and table styles of different types, in manners which minimise the time taken to produce visually interesting and reader-friendly documents. Students will also be instructed on the use of referencing, referncing styles and the manner with which one may create an automated referencing system within a document in order to facilitate updates thereof. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit is designed to train the students: - to make the best use of available word processing software in the preparation of academic papers and professional reports, characterised by high quality presentations, through the application of features of such packages which are rarely used by the average user; and - to be able to produce well referenced texts that are presented and formatted in an appropriate manner and that may set the basis for academic writing throughout the execution of the undergraduate degree in spatial planning. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - efficiently prepare academic papers and reports, the presentation of which would be in line with established referencing styles and of a high quality presentation; - prepare well structured documents that are logically set our and that provide for a cohesive overall understanding of the subject matter being addressed. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - design templates and character, paragraph, and table styles of different types, maintain and update the templates, and use them in time-saving ways in the preparation of academic papers and professional reports; - deliver well referenced and well structured pieces of academic writing.
