Study-Unit Description

CODE SPI1304

TITLE Sustainable and Responsive Planning

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Spatial Planning and Infrastructure

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is aimed at familiarising students with the concepts of sustainable development/mobility and how these are applied in the context of natural resource and infrastructure.

In particular focus will be on:
- understanding sustainable development and mobility in the context of natural resources and infrastructure;
- polluter pays concepts;
- the different available forms of water and how they can be matched to intended uses;
- local versus centralised water management;
- water efficient design;
- waste generation and management;
- waste and the circular economy;
- waste management facilities;
- challenges in reducing automobile dependencies as seen from the perspective of densely populated areas;
- the role which inter-modality plays in the provision of sustainable modes of transport.

In order to ensure the country's competitiveness, infrastructural development needs to be firmly integrated into the planning system such that the necessary requirements for the planning horizon are factored into the development process. Development needs to respect current infrastructural capacity whilst a good planning horizon is required for planning for infrastructural upgrading that permits the envisaged development.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to:

1. familiarise students with the various waters that are available for different uses;
2. identify ways and means by which physical development may be made more water efficient;
3. impart knowledge on sustainable transport, public transportation, mobility management, the sharing economy, attitudes and behaviour towards different transportation modes;
4. identify ways by which future planning can be improved through a focus on transit-oriented development;
5. recognise the value of waste as a resource;
6. integrate waste management as part of the built environment;
7. explore sustainable development and mobility principles in the context of natural resources and infrastructure;
8. understand cause and effect dynamics;
9. identify human impacts and the costs associated therein as a result of development.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. identify water resources in the various forms they occur and how these can be best utilised ito maximise the water resource base;
2. recognise the different modes of sustainable transportation systems, their issues and opportunities;
3. inculcate sustainability principles in decision making;
4. define the relationship between sustainable mobility and infrastructural systems;
5. examine how development related pressures can impact natural resource availability and the carrying capacity of infrastructure;
6. discover the resource value of waste;
7. visualise how spatial planning can contribute towards a more circular economy.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. assess projected demand on existing carrying capacities;
2. apply sustainability principles to planning decisions;
3. assess policy robustness in Malta.
