| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will be looking at the importance of value based social work practice. It will consist of theoretical input, agency visits, students鈥 presentations and students working in groups to discuss situations where ethical issues arise in practice. The ethical principles underlying social work will be explored in depth and students will be encouraged to consider and discuss important ethical dilemmas from their own experience while on placement or any other job exposure from the perspective of social work professional values. Students will have the opportunity to look at ethical decisions taken by other social workers and share their views about them. Study-Unit Aims: - Explore the ethical issues and dilemmas that professional social workers encounter in practice with individuals, groups, families, agencies and communities; - Discuss ethical theory and models for decision making; - Apply ethical theory and models for decision making to practice; - Address the ways in which personal and professional values di铿er; - Keep abreast with contemporary or emerging components impacting ethics in social work, such as, AI; - Provoke thoughtful engagement with the material presented in class. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the relationship between Ethics and Values; - Recognise and review Ethical issues in Social Work practice; - Explore the ethical implications of emerging technologies, such as, AI, in social work; - Demonstrate knowledge of the values brought forward by NASW and other competent bodies in the social work context; - Demonstrate knowledge of the historical evolution of Ethics in Social Work; - Describe the best ethical practices that are identi铿乪d in the social work literature; - Appraise how their own personal values di铿er from and are similar to the values of the Social Work profession. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate the ability to apply ethical theory, rank ordering and ethical reasoning to ethical dilemmas; - Demonstrate the ability to use and critique Codes of Ethics; - Demonstrate the ability to use experiential learning to become grounded in the values of the profession and the role of ethics for practice; - Demonstrate an ability to make good use of supervision in the ethical decision-making process; - Demonstrate the ability to reflect on emerging trends and technologies that impact the ethical component in the profession; - Demonstrate an ability to resolve discrepancies between personal and professional values.
