DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the wide range of pedagogical skills required by the teacher in order to teach basic accounting principles in a mixed-ability context. It emphasizes the fact that it is the teacher's knowledge of the content together with the methodology of teaching the subject that is the key to success.

Throughout this unit student-teachers will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with about half of the topics of Accounting at SEC level, and the various effective ways of teaching them. They will practice how to create effective handouts made up of structured exercises that gradually increase in difficulty. They will also learn how to create a set of resources for each topic.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- equip student teachers with a wide range of pedagogical skills enabling the teaching of basic accounting principles;
- make sure that they are well-versed with the accounting SEC topics covered in this unit;
- help student teachers appreciate the fact that they will be facing mixed-ability classes;
- help them understand the importance of accounting as a dynamic subject which therefore requires them to keep abreast with any changes issued by the international accounting boards;
- make student teachers aware of the importance of using local examples when teaching the subject.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- recognise which are the basic principles required to learn accounting;
- recall very well the topics covered in this unit;
- discuss the sequence by which accounting topics are best dealt with;
- identify the websites to refer to in order to keep up-to-date with any changes in accounting standards and laws.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- propose a variety of learning activities to teach basic accounting principles in mixed-ability classes;
- plan and organise teaching material, including well-designed handouts;
- deconstruct concepts into manageable learning activities;
- employ the double-entry system in the teaching of any accounting aspect;
- effective employ the white-board and the interactive board;
- create an environment conducive to education.
