DESCRIPTION This study-unit discusses the ideological perspectives underlying business and economic theory. The impact of different ideologies on the curriculum is examined. The student teacher is exposed to the theoretical and practical implications of economic and financial literacy and entrepreneurship education. This unit also examines strategies that could be implemented to improve and develop economic/financial literacy and entrepreneurship programmes within the local educational context.

Study-Unit Aims:

This unit aims to equip student teachers with:
- an awareness of the ideological standpoints underpinning business and economic theory.
- an analysis of the impact of different ideologies on society, educational policies and the curriculum.
- a critical understanding of economic and financial literacy and entrepreneurship education and how these areas can be developed in the learners entrusted to their care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- recognise the ideological perspectives underlying business education,
- demonstrate knowledge of critical education,
- explain financial and economic literacy,
- describe the role of teachers in implementing entrepreneurship education, and
- evaluate the pitfalls of economic and financial literacy and entrepreneurship education programmes and be able to improve such established programmes to avoid such pitfalls.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- evaluate a business education topic from a critical perspective,
- envisage how he/she teaches this topic in a critical manner,
- critically appraise business curricula, syllabi and textbooks,
- envisage ways how to teach business ethics across the curriculum,
- propose ways how to educate in citizenship and entrepreneurship education, and
- write programmes to target economic and financial literacy.
