| DESCRIPTION | The main aims of teaching technical and vocational education in Malta’s secondary schools are to prepare students with the key competences in preparation for the further education and the acquisition of theoretical and practical skills. Teaching and learning Media Literacy skills in Technical and Vocational secondary schools requires adequate strategies which apart from making students obtain the theory of Media Literacy will enable the learners to function in the contemporary society which continuosly is characterised by constantly evolving and changing media. Teaching and learning strategies in a technical and vocational education programme implies imparting the basic scientific knowledge, attitudes and practical skills necessary for self-reliance and national development. The practical know-how, scientific skills and knowledge are to make the recipient (individual) to be creative and productive to function as a performing member of the society. Study-Unit Aims: By the end of the study- unit the learners will be exposed to ideas how to use the following concepts while teaching their Media Literacy classrooms: - Adopting a gradual approach where progress starts from simple activities which later develop to more complex tasks; - Promoting and motivating the active participation of motivated students; - Showing flexibility accommodate individual differences of the learners; - Design resources which facilitate and promote student centred learning contexts; - Link classroom activities with real life work-based activities; - Retention of knowledge and transfer of skills acquired. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply various media literacy vocational education theories with pedagogical practices; - Apply the various media literacy vocational theories that fit with the ever changing learning demands of particular educational landscapes; - Interpret the use and applications of particular learning theories into various media literacy vocational contexts; - Explore various pedagogies applied when delivering hands-on media literacy pedagogical activities. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply appropriate practical skills and a variety of pedagogical resources that one can use in media literacy vocational education; - Formulate and prepare suitable lesson materials and assessment methods which one can use in different media literacy educational contexts; - Involve other participants in assessment techniques such as peer review and other formative assessment methods.
