DEPARTMENT Technology and Entrepreneurship Education

DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores a number of resources which the Computing teacher can utilise to effectively scaffold learning and construct authentic, student-centered educational experiences.

Students will get to investigate a selection of readily available open educational resources (OER), as well as resources which, although not specifically designed for instructional use, may be repurposed by the Computing teacher for use in the classroom. Students will critically evaluate the suitability and appropriateness of such resources and how to use them effectively in attaining curricular objectives.

Additionally, students will learn how to design their own educational resources,including worksheets, screencasts, webquests, and online learning spaces.

This study-unit aims to:
- Introduce prospective Computing teachers to some of the many Open Educational Resources (OER) that are available;
- Show how Bloom's Taxonomy can be used as a framework for evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of resources and their appropriateness for achieving prescribed learning outcomes;
- Explore the characteristics of a well-designed teaching resource;
- Investigate the educational potential of resources not specifically designed for teaching, such as online video clips, technical news websites and blogs, open software, and public domain / creative-commons content;
- Teach the student how to design and/or adapt resources such as webquests, worksheets, screencasts etc.
