DESCRIPTION This dissertation for the attainment of the Licentiate in Theology will address an aspect of pastoral ministry. At the end the students will also have an oral examination on the dissertation.

In conjunction with this study-unit, in the first semester of the second year, students will have two seminars in which they will be able to share the research done for their dissertation. Discussions on how to improve the studies will form an essential aspect of the seminar.

Study-unit Aims:

The scope of the Dissertation study-unit is to reflect on an aspect of theology and write in an academic manner how these reflections may contribute to the Church and society.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- think critically and focus clearly on an area of pastoral concern, utilising research methodology and pastoral resources;
- apply learnt doctrine and principles to concrete situations in society.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- have a strong foundation necessary to be able to conduct their own academic research;
- examine societal issues and contexts and present a disertation which analyses this reality;
- be competent in the execution of pastoral theological research, the application of appropriate methodologies and in one's reflection of the area of study chosen.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination/Presentation is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
