DESCRIPTION | Through a series of practical sessions, students will learn some of the most important notions related to acting as it is practiced in mainstream theatre. They will be trained in aspects of acting such as the use of voice, the correct use of language, movement in relation to space, the creation/interpretation of role and character, reading playtexts in a productive way, the dynamics of working with others on stage, relating to directorial expectations and understanding when it is useful to be assertive, and relating to different spectatorships. Sessions will be delivered by experts in the area, both from within the department and from the pool of professional collaborators that THS has assembled and continues to assemble. Students are expected to participate fully in every session and to engage in pre-session and post-session tasks. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to help students acquire skills that are required from them to work as actors in professional settings. They will receive training in these skills and will have opportunities to use said skills and receive immediate feedback. The study-unit will prepare students to understand their strengths and limitations as actors and to work to improve themselves. The main aim of the study-unit is that students become confident performers who will judiciously choose which auditions to participate in and which projects best reflect their interests and their strengths and to deliver performances to the required standards. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a. read play texts for cues relating to the requirements of their performance; b. imagine and create character within a specific space and ambience; c. move confidently and appropriately on stage; d. project voice in relation to role, mood, and space; e. use language correctly and as appropriate to the performance; f. respond to directions in real time and contribute to the overall interpretation in a performance. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: . follow standard directorial instructions; c. audition for work in professional settings; d. work with others in a respectful and efficient manner; e. identify and respond to health and safety issues relating to preparing for and performing in theatres; f. relate appropriately with third-parties (spectators, media, etc.).
