| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit consists of lectures and practical sessions on aspects of grammar, style, and the formal and informal use of English in various text types. There will be writing and re-writing exercises, as well as translation work into English. There will be discussion on the range of varieties of English and its role as Global Lingua Franca. Analysis of a variety of texts around a topic, such as Tourism and Heritage, will be examined to determine characteristic linguistic features. Students will produce short analyses to accompany their translations through which they will defend conclusions on translation solutions and strategies used based the function (skopos) of the text. Participants will draw on their background in Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis from TIS5039. This study-unit covers: - The course will also involve working with texts that are specific to Tourism and Heritage. This will provide a focus and a link to industry requirements in the field of Tourism. Readers鈥� expectations, formal and informal language use, cultural divides, local cultural terms, and more, will create a strong pragmatic and style focus for the practical work on exisitng texts such as brochures, museum panels, information labels, promotional material, and so on; - Fieldwork, in the form of visits to heritage sites, is included as practical assessment of existing text and audio material; - Study of readers鈥� cooperation and expectations with references to genres and textual style; - A section on literary translation will also be included as a means to recognize different strategies involved in the translation of the literary text, dialogue, bad language and spoken style; - Written tasks will be assigned according to specific skopos. This will bring theoretical considerations together with practice. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to improve the students鈥� understanding and use of the English Language through a focus on style and register, of degrees of formality and informality in written language, dialogue in spoken language (in preparation for audio-visual translation), and an increased understanding of aspects of grammar, such as the tense system, modality, conditionality and punctuation as preparation for effective translation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Handle with increased competence translation of texts into English; - Recognize and effectively deal with different types of documents and texts in a more natural manner; - Take into account the features of various types of texts; - Recognize the context in which the text will be read, thereby taking the intended function of the text into account. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discover translating strategies related to style, intended audience and function; - Devise the best approach to take for the translation of texts and justify the reasons; - Provide an adequate translation of texts.
