| DESCRIPTION | Innovation is the secret of great and successful organisations. Tourism, is a dynamic sector that is continuously evolving. In order for destinations to retain their competitive advantage they need to continuously address the nature of their operations and activities, including product development and product enhancement. This Study Unit will define innovation and its application in tourism, culture, heritage and leisure organisations. It will analyse management practices within tourism, heritage and culture organisations - highlighting the main aspects of working in dynamic and very often multinational organisations. It will highlight issues of managing public and private organisations - looking at ways in which these organisations can achieve optimum management through innovation. The Unit, which is a series of lectures and hands on practical activity will address the application of the concepts of innovation and innovative management techniques within tourism, heritage, cultural and leisure organisations; the implications of using innovation on current management practices, the creation of new products and services for tourism, culture heritage and leisure, and entrepreneurship. This unit will also highlight the importance of innovation for destination competitiveness. Study-unit Aims This study unit familiarises the students with the basic concepts of innovation and its application in the field of managing tourism, culture, heritage and leisure organisations. It will engage students in arguments that will evaluate methods of management of tourism activities and to assess new practices. In addition this unit will encourage students to come up with innovative ways of seeing tourism, culture, heritage and leisure products and services. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define innovation - Analyze current management practices within public and private tourism and cultural organisations - Demonstrate how innovation can be applied to create innovative tourism products and services - Use innovative management techniques to address specific situations and to generate solutions that are effective and efficient - Identify the competitive advantage (in relation to tourism destinations and attractions) 2.
