DESCRIPTION The study-unit provides a solid introduction to the bodies of the European Union and other international institutions such as the United Nations. It gives students an overview of the historical and current issues concerning these bodies and institutions, with special reference to the concept of multilingualism as applied in the EU, the existence of Eurolects and EU-related terminology.

In addition, students will gain an in-depth insight into the history and role of the main EU institutions, as well as their linguistic requirements and conventions. In addition, they will keep abreast of the main developments at EU and international level (e.g., the latest debates as well as (proposals for) decisions, directives, regulations and acts).

Through interpreting exercises (consecutive with and without notes, sight translation, shadowing, booth practice etc.), students will familiarise with EU-related terminology, proceedings and linguistic conventions (e.g., stock phrases and EU jargon) so as to effectively prepare for their future work environment.

This study-unit consists of 50% theory and 50% practical interpreting exercises based on the theory covered.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Provide students with the historical and cultural background of the EU and other international institutions;
- Provide students with an opportunity to have a good understanding of the role and competences of the EU and other international institutions;
- Assist students in identifying the information resources required for interpreters to prepare glossaries, and keep abreast of the main developments at EU and international level;
- Contextualise multilingualism within the EU framework and the provision of language services by the institutions;
- Familiarise students with EU terminology and linguistic conventions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Have a solid overview of the history of the EU and other international organisations, including but not limited to, the United Nations;
- Be aware of the history and role of the main EU institutions, as well as their linguistic requirements and conventions;
- Recall the competences of the different bodies of the EU and of the formal acts promulgated by them, such as treaties, directives, regulations, etc.;
- Define the main concepts related to multilingualism and the EU;
- Recognise the main figures of the EU institutions and describe their roles and competences;
- Distinguish EU and national competences in specific sectors;
- Examine and evaluate different positions on certain issues discussed at EU level.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain notions related to the EU and other international organisations, such as Schengen, Eurozone, freedom of movement, CAP, Brexit, etc. and accurately interpret speeches concerning these topics through a variety of exercises, including sight translations and consecutive exercises;
- Compose a multilingual glossary of EU terminology.
