ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Visual Arts

DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the digital skill sets associated with contemporary design practice. These skills span a wide spectrum of contemporary design, from the initial phases of thinking and brainstorming to the final phases of publishing and sharing of content. The aim of this introduction is to consolidate the skills obtained from other study-units, and encourage the students to look at the process of designing, prototyping, documenting and publishing as a holistic process, where each aspect deserves as much attention as the other. The intention of this study-unit is to empower students to develop their own design strategy and in the process help them set up personal academic portfolios with the relevant research questions in the field of design.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:

- assist students in developing their digital literacy with respect to thinking, presenting, making, prototyping, documenting and publishing;
- provide students with the required skill set to rapidly design, prototype and fabricate a specific design idea;
- consolidate skills in film making and photography to document the design of a product.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify the most appropriate prototyping technique for a given design;
- design a product using both digital and analogue techniques;
- fabricate mock-up prototypes to explain an idea;
- understand the design process leading from concept to manufacturing.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- research and represent design ideas;
- make 2D and 3D drawings using CAD packages;
- undertake visual programming;
- undertake additive manufacturing using CAM packages.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

Readings will be directed by the tutors in relation to the specific research themes that will be developed in the project assignments.
