| DESCRIPTION | Throughout these sessions, we will analyse the influence of Ancient Greek and Roman literature on the visual arts of the Neoclassical, Romantic, and Modern movements. We will delve into the works of foundational authors, from the epic traditions of Greece to the heights of the Roman Empire, exploring themes such as patriotic propaganda, pastoral imagery, and romance. By the end of the course, students will be able to identify classical iconography and symbolism. They will also gain an appreciation for the literary texts behind some of the most famous artists' works. We will end with a discussion of how the classics continue to impact our world in the 21st century. Objectives: - To provide a comprehensive overview of the reception of Ancient Greek and Roman literature within the visual arts. - To examine the evolution of artistic movements, specifically Neoclassicism, Romanticism, and Modernism, through the perspective of classical influence. -To explore how foundational themes, such as patriotic propaganda, pastoral utopias, and romance, have been adapted from antiquity to suit modern contexts. - To foster a critical understanding of the enduring relevance of the Classics in contemporary 21st-century culture. Unit Material: Reading materials will be provided by the lecturer throughout the sessions. Assessment: In keeping with the spirit of the Degree Plus, there will be no formal assessment for this study-unit. A certificate of attendance will be awarded to students upon satisfactory completion of the unit. |
