It is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with distinct pathology. At present, the pharmacotherapy of AD involves the use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist memantine. The former imply neuroprotection hence slowing disease progression while the latter may block neuronal excitotoxicity.
