Malta has a semi-arid climate that is characterized by short periods of rainfall during a part of the year. In addition, there are no lakes or rivers resulting in insufficient fresh water resources to meet the requirements of an overpopulated island. To meet demand, the country relies on a high extraction rate from underground sources supplemented by water produced via reverse osmosis plants. Given that it is known that intention is closely related to behaviour, this study investigates the intention of Maltese households to save and reduce water usage. It employs Ajzen's (1991) Theory of Planned Behaviour (TpB) to develop hypotheses that link the relevant Attitudes and their related Subjective Norms and Perceived Behaviour Control with how these impact the intention of households to save and reduce water usage. A questionnaire is developed and data are collected from a sample of Maltese households. The questionnaire was found to have acceptable psychometric properties and it allowed meaningful testing of the hypotheses. Among others, results indicate that Perceived Behaviour Control has the strongest effect on Intention to save and reduce water usage. Implications from the results for policy are drawn, limitations are noted and directions for future research are indicated. Plant communities have diverse variations of which may occur due to seasonality, site, location and climate to name a few. These communities themselves usually have one or more species that act as the dominant population/s regulating overall population growth and abundance of other species. This is the situation found at Ghalis. Having a narrow strip of coastline at such, proximate exposure to the natural elements do undoubtedly make conditions harsh for any living organism to survive such an environment. Nevertheless, Ghallis is constantly covered with varying vegetation types, of which Inula crithmoides seems to dominate. Thus, the goal of this study is to understand the plant community within Ghallis and to affirm Inula crithmoides as in fact the dominant and/or determinant plant population within the plant community itself. This study will provide a descriptive based knowledge of the vegetation at Ghallis of which no previous study has fully conducted. This gives rise to different landscapes and also different perceptions associated with them. These perceptions often vary, depending on the different stakeholders, their knowledge, agendas and use of the coast. Through qualitative research, this study aims to look at the different perceptions on the coast of Birzebbuga. It will analyse whether perceptions are in fact influenced by the stakeholders' interaction with the coast and how the knowledge of the coast differs between stakeholders. It will also look at how the stakeholders take care of and manage the coast and if this depends on their knowledge and perception of the latter. This study is a much needed research, given that as none other has been done on the town of Swieqi before. It seeks to analyse the pattern of growth and development of the town, as it grew from a small village into an urban town. The research approach adopted in this dissertation includes field studies, map analysis, the creation of Geographical ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ Systems (GIS) maps and their analysis, and interviews. The findings and main conclusions drawn from this study show how Swieqi emerged from the town's periphery and along the perimeter of the main road of the town. It also reveals the present and future impacts of contemporary redevelopments according to stakeholders in Swieqi. This dissertation recommends that future research and studies continue to be carried out on the growing urban town. Description: B.A.(HONS)GEOGRAPHY 2011-01-01T00:00:00Z
