Abstract: The emergence of environmental considerations in our lives are here to stay.
Environmental issues are playing a role in, the pressures influencing policy -
making in every country.
Malta also considers the issue of wastes as a demanding one. So, even if we
try to approach waste management solutions, there still seems to be a vast creation
of wastes.
The first phases of this project entailed a background history of the nature
of wastes. The fact that wastes are a local challenge, was also considered as
highlights from local newspapers abstracts.
The project then focused on the surveys carried out among consumers and
producers of packaging materials (Chemicals and Allied Products sector). Also
included in the analysis were statistical models.
Waste minimisation was discussed, with packaging considered as a case
study. Such a pro-active approach, should be given a priority in a hierarchy of a
waste management scheme.
The means to the end of implementing waste minimisation is further
research and education. Such tool, should be considered by all sectors of waste
production - being Government institutions to private or residential sectors.

Abstract: Skin cancer is a malignant tumour of the skin and known to be one of the most common forms of
cancer. In 1995, 26% of the deaths in Malta were caused by cancer, of which approximately 33%
died from skin cancer.
Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma are the most common
forms of skin cancer in Malta and in many other parts of the World, of which, mainly, are related
to long-term exposure to sunlight. Rare skin disorders, such as Bowen 's disease, can be cancerous
and may also lead to skin cancer as they may be related to sun exposure or any other risk factor.
Even though, most skin cancers can be easily cured if treated early, many people die because they
delay seeking treatment, especially from squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma.

Abstract: Water is relatively simple molecule when chemically pure. In nature
water is not pure but contains many impurities. These impurities must
therefore be eliminated so that water can be used for the various purposes in
our food industry.
One of the most recent steps human made, to eliminate these impurities
is, Reverse Osmosis. This is the most common water treatment system
industrially used nowadays, and its popularity is always on the increase
because of its performance. Once a Reverse Osmosis plant is installed,
adequate pre-treatment and monitoring ensure that this performance is
maintained.
Treated water is than used in the various needs of the particular food
industry. These needs may range from the equipment itself (needed in a
production line) to the final addition of water to the end product.
It is of a big importance therefore, that water is always treated prior to
use, and if possible, why not being reused.
