Abstract: Prior to the coming of the Order of St. John to Malta (1530) the island's strategic point had been Mdina. What is now probably Europe's quietest city was then the focal point for an administration whose main and only horizon was the island's internal affairs. When piratical attacks took place however, and these were by no means uncommon occurrences, it was common practice for the Maltese to retreat into the old city. Things changed when the knights appeared on the scene. For them the Grand Harbour was the most important part of the island and the main area to be protected against attack. Admittedly, Fort St. Angelo had been there well prior to 1530 but with. just two guns it certainly had never been meant to give the Grand Harbour complete military coverage. Abstract: Events of recent years are slowly forcing upon the Maltese a new awareness of their geographical context. Starting from the very palpable fact of political independence and the realization of the impact which Mediterranean happenings have on the Maltese economy, attention is progressively being focused on the Mediterranean nature of the Maltese identity, as opposed to past assumptions about the English, Italian or "European" characteristics of Maltese society. The more important results of the change of attitudes could ultimately be cultural, rather than political or economic. It is easy to exaggerate this phenomenon or to insist on its being all too recent. There is in fact a strong case for arguing that there has on a number of occasions been a certain movement culturally for a return towards the old, primitive roots of the native Maltese.
