The project analysis the possibility of replacing the electrical generator by a hydraulic pump. Such systems can be utilised to drive a centralised hydraulic turbine in reverse osmosis plants. This project analyses the dynamic response of a wind turbine driving a swash-plate pump, by utilising basic control principles to create models in MATLABĀ® and SIMULINK. The system is validated against a reference wind turbine such as the National Renewabe Energy Laboratories' (NREL) 5-MW Reference Wind Turbine. Malta, as member of the European Union (EU) is obliged by the European Commission (EC) to reach specific energy and environmental targets by 2020. One of the obligations is to have 10% of the energy demand generated from renewable sources by 2020. Malta is promoting renewable energy sources through incentive schemes in order to reach this target while reducing the emissions of green house gases (GHG). The integration of renewable energy resources with for electricity grid is presenting a new challenge to the electricity distribution network operator (DNO). The electricity distribution system is no longer being seen as passive, where power flows from the main generation system to energy consumers, but it is becoming an active one, where consumers are also generating electricity, instigating a bi-directional power flow. Two sets of PV modules and reflectors were studied. During this study, the PV panels were installed at the optimum inclination angle and azimuth, and placed on a flat horizontal surface. The materials of true reflectors were chosen to be as cost effective as possible, widely available and most commonly used locally. Description: M.SC.SUS.ENERGY 2013-01-01T00:00:00Z
