Chi oggi è affetto dall'AIDS, sindrome nuova, contagiosa e mortale, vive praticamente emarginato, come lo erano in passato i lebbrosi. Abstract: There are very few countries in the world, if any, where catechesis is held all the year
round, at least four times a week. Malta enjoys the special privilege of having catechesis
organised so frequently. This is the result of the endeavours and of the tireless efforts of
Dun Ġorġ Preca, a local diocesan priest who lived his priestly vocation in total dedication
to the ministry of evangelisation. For this reason, he established the Society of Christian
Doctrine, composed of lay people who live a celibate life in order to dedicate themselves
totally to catechesis. Not only is Dun Ġorġ Preca the founder of the Society of Christian
Doctrine, but he also nourished and sustained its members through his writings, which
were primarily aimed at instructing them, in order that they would be able to instruct
others.

Abstract: The notion of formation in our contemporary times has gained a very important role
which in previous decades it neither had nor was granted. Formation is taken so seriously
that large and small companies pre-dispose considerable amounts of their annual budgets
for this activity. This is because the process of the formation of the worker creates a more
humane environment in the different places where work is carried out. Through formation
the human being becomes aware of his/her potentialities in solving new problems, thus
opening the way to the creation and re-creation of oneself.
The reason why I have decided to elaborate a dissertation on this theme is that during
my studies in catechetics at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome I have become
conscious of the inadequacy of professional catechist formation, while being convinced of
the necessity of a good catechist formation. Moreover, the documents of the Universal
Church and other documents belonging to local Churches emphasise the necessity of up-to date catechist formation programmes. The Church in Malta has responded to the need of
the formation of its pastoral agents by setting up an Institute of Pastoral Formation. I am
aware that nobody in Malta has ever attempted an in-depth study of the theme in question.
Therefore, by this dissertation I hope to offer a small contribution towards the
improvement of the formation of catechists engaged in child catechesis in Malta.

Abstract: As I was teaching and doing other missionary work in Kenya my superiors
asked me to come to Rome and finish my doctorate in Moral Theology. Having
arrived at the end of my research, I can now say that this endeavour was a
challenge worth living.
Among the first reasons why I have this positive reaction is that after 15
years of teaching Moral Theology I could now have more time to study and
update myself in my studies. Moral Theology is always to take into account the
new developments in the society of man. There is an utmost need to update
oneself.
One of the areas which is changing and developing rapidly is the field of
bioethics. Very frequently, news appears about new successes, particularly
concerning experiments in A.P.
To tell the truth, choosing to do my research on bioethics came about both
because of the interest which these problems have always created in me, and
also, because in my experience as a hospital chaplain and marriage counsellor
I could see more and more that these problems were becoming increasingly
more pressing in our times.
Besides, the subject matter which I taught in Moral Theology always had
to do with issues in social justice and theology of marriage. Thus, coming to
choose a theme for my research, it almost came natural that I choose the Church
doctrine on the respect for human life in its origin and on the dignity of
procreation. For me these issues are a question of rights of the e:nbryo but also
a matter of how to understand marriage.
As a Moral Theology scholar, I want to deepen my studies about the
theological arguments brought forward by the Church with regard to this present
issue of A.P. Thus, I opted to centre my research on the Instruction "Donum
Vitae" (the gift of life) as my main text: This is, in fact, the last official .and in
a sense the first document of the Church which treated this issue. It was
published in 1987 by the C.D.F. I want to go through the origir:, meaning and
doctrinal follow-up of this Instruction. I am encouraged to continue on this
theme remembering what the Instruction itself said to moral theologians.
