Rabat sacrum [Book review]
/library/oar/handle/123456789/131634
Title: Rabat sacrum [Book review]
Authors: Gauci, Mario
Abstract: This new publication entitled Rabat Sacrum, co-authored by Thomas Freller and the late Mgr John Azzopardi, aims at providing a fresh perspective of the sacrality of Rabat from a European viewpoint, from the early modern history of Malta until the present day. Early modern travel literature was largely produced by the elite classes. These travelers had several interests. Some delighted in contemplation of the arts; some sought to discover the decay of ruins and Maltese antiquity; others remarked on the strange customs_ and fashions as they, passed through Maltese towns and villages. But their curiosity drove them to walk that extra mile and discover the fertile town of Rabat which fostered our national identity. [excerpt]

Title: Archives of the cathedral of Malta Misc.32B : 1530-1660 : the study and text of an eighteenth-century index of transcripts [Book review]
Authors: Farrugia, Charles J.
Abstract: One of the frustrations in the life of an archivist is the difficulty in answering clients when they ask for records specific to their area of research. We do not have the magic wand librarians have in the form of their automated catalogues. The highly structured world of cataloguing in libraries is nowadays very much ingrained in our academic programs at Universities. Thus, it is not surprising that researchers who spend much of their time browsing between library and archival worlds find the archival systems quite complex, slow, and archaic. This derives from the very nature of the records. No archival record comes with a ready-made CIP or any of the other authority control metadata. In most cases researchers will be reaching out for items that ' were never studied before. Thus, archives need to invest in the creation of finding aids, and this is a specialized and elaborate process. That explains why this publication is another most welcome . initiative for the sector.

Early British interventions on the Grand Harbour Baroque hospitaller fortifications

Title: Early British interventions on the Grand Harbour Baroque hospitaller fortifications
Authors: Bonnici, Hermann
Abstract: When the British took over the control of the Islands from the French on September 5, 1800, they instantly inherited all the Hospitaller fortifications of the Baroque age with the exception of a handful of coastal works that had either fallen into disrepair or had been abandoned. Although in many places neglected and structurally dilapidated, the majority of these defensive works were still very valid and capable works of fortification, and in certain instances, as in the case of Fort Tigné, even ahead of their time. Taking stock of the situation, therefore, was the first natural British reaction and the early years of British rule, as such, witnessed the commissioning of a series of reports addressing the state of local defences. Measures were thus taken to survey the defence assets, collect surviving drawings of the fortifications and identify their needs with the scope of carrying out immediate repair.
