Existing outdoor triangulation positioning techniques like Global Positioning System (GPS) and Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) prove futile and are generally not suitable or accurate enough for indoors, particularly for multilevel buildings. The set goal is to design a system that enables a single Wi-Fi access point (AP) to locate the client device, without support from any additional infrastructure in place. Further, no prior radio-frequency finger-printing procedure is required, thus reducing the computational complexity significantly. This report reviews attempts to design a novel positioning approach with the help of current knowledge. The method suggested in this report is a hybrid angle of arrival (AoA) and received signal strength (RSS) technique. By making use of ray tracing to characterise the propagation in a multi-path rich environment and taking advantage of beamforming and the multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system, a fairly accurate estimation can be obtained. Making use of a ray-tracing analysis, as presented herein, allows for site-specific location positioning using only a single AP. The objective of the report is to present the methodologies and complications encountered in implementing such a system and to present a preliminary analysis of calculations, measurement accuracy and simulation of the suggested algorithm. This project aims to create a system suitable for the transmission of video at a 10 Gigabit data rate. The modular approach adopted decomposes the problem to its core elements and then synthesises a final complete design. Tests were performed to verify the final design’s functionality. A number of simulations were also carried out at each stage of the design process. Particular difficulty was observed with respect to the synchronisation of received video data together with paired video timing signalling. This was resolved through the introduction of a FIFO buffer together with other components seen in this text. The final throughput, tested and verified, was very close to 10G, meeting the aim of this project. There exist various imaging modalities such as Magnetic Resource Imaging, Ultrasound and Computed Tomography (CT). The latter is used extensively for detection and diagnosis of brain haemorrhage. Computer Aided Detection/Diagnosis (CAD) systems are used by radiologists as a tool which helps them during the diagnosis phase. Increasingly, CAD is becoming a key component of routine clinical practice in several medical areas such as mammography and colonoscopy. Research regarding brain CAD systems has not progressed at the same pace as research in the mentioned areas. This provides a need as well as an opportunity to contribute to the research by developing a CAD system for brain haemorrhage detection and classification. This study applies image processing techniques to brain CT scans with the aim of creating a CAD system which detects fresh bleeds. The system also includes a basic classification that identifies the haemorrhage type. The system distinguishes between an intra-axial haemorrhage and an extra-axial haemorrhage with the only limitation being subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), which is not always properly classified due to its complex structure. The techniques implemented in this study include noise reduction methods through the use of filters, morphological operations and segmentation algorithms, such as thresholding and clustering. The designed CAD system was tested on 36 brain CT sets obtained from the general hospital in Malta. The results show that the system achieved a sensitivity of 94.4%, a specificity of 94.4%, a precision of 91.259% and a classification accuracy of 88.89%. The system performed the required operations in an average time of 0.26 seconds per slice. Description: B.SC.(HONS)COMPUTER ENG. 2017-01-01T00:00:00Z The implementation of the SATA protocol on an FPGA /library/oar/handle/123456789/23383 Title: The implementation of the SATA protocol on an FPGA Abstract: The MEMENTO (Multi camEra high fraMe ratE syNchronisaTion) is an initiative at commercialising a high speed multi-camera system. A system which will require enormous amount of data transfers between the camera devices and storage hub. All information transfer is done via serial transceivers, with a minimum of eight transceiver lines each capable of handling 10Gb/s transfer rates. In light of this, this final year project aims at solving and providing solutions regarding the data storage assignment. Serial ATA is the chosen protocol which will be used for meeting the requirements. The latest version, SATA III, can reach speeds up to 6Gb/s. A SATA core is to be implemented on an FPGA and tested on various storage devices. Most of the work was directed towards the bottom layers of the core, mainly in the underlying transceivers conducting all the differential signalling. The work is implemented on a Xilinx Artix 7 device for development purposes which will eventually be migrated to a larger Ultrascale device. Description: B.SC.(HONS)COMPUTER ENG. 2017-01-01T00:00:00Z
