Title: Dilapidated houses in Cottonera : taking Vittoriosa as a case study.
Abstract: One of the primary purposes of a dwelling is to provide shelter for man from
the hostile elements of his environment. Since the day man moved out of
caves he developed forms of shelter which conscientiously reflected his needs,
as conditioned by the particular context within which he lived.
If dwellings are left unattended they will deteriorate in a cycle from newly
built, to dilapidation and disrepair, leading to unfitness and the likelihood of
deterioration.
This process of dilapidation and deterioration is easily understood in general
terms, though it is extremely vast in operation. All houses will eventually
deteriorate but individual materials degrade at different rates, with the
optimum frequency of replacement varying between materials. Each
component of the above mentioned cycle will be subject to modification,
depending on local factors, which involve the quality of the original design,
materials and maintenance.
In certain areas of the Maltese Islands there is an increasing problem of
disrepair in the housing stock which necessitates immediate action.
Chapter One of this dissertation describes the parameters of Healthy Housing
according to the World Health Organization standards and later, this chapter
presents a broad definition of a dilapidated dwelling. Having done this, one
gets an immediate impression of the contrast between these two extremities.
Chapter Two gives a contemporary overview of the problem of dilapidated
dwellings in Cottonera, whilst taking Vittoriosa as a case study to illustrate the
precarious situation in which several houses in Vittoriosa are in. In this
chapter, one also finds a comprehensive historical account intended to
promote an awareness that Vittoriosa together with the other two cities was
not always in such a state of deterioration. Vittoriosa was indeed once a city
of great wealth and prestige. The concluding paragraphs of this chapter point
out the reasons why the houses in Vittoriosa became dilapidated. In Chapter
Three the focus moves to the survey that was carried out in Vittoriosa and
from which several statistical reports were concluded. The context of this
dissertation is further developed in Chapter Four, which points out in detail all
the remedial steps that could be taken to finally overcome the problem of
dilapidated houses in Cottonera.

Title: Nutrition information on labels.
Abstract: Today's fast developing world has opened infinite horizons for the food
restricted. The need of identification of food has then arisen. Labeling has also
been developed as a result of the expansion of the food industry. The label acts
as a protection for the consumer as it provides identification. Identification of
food has been provided by the presence of a label affixed to the food. In the
past information on labels was limited, ,basically only the product name was
inducted.. Other information was not listed as this was not required by law.
Although labels helped to choose and promote the food, and to inform the consumer, these were also used to deceive the consumer in some cases as labels
tend to be designed for more promotional purposes. This could be easily
achieved, such .as by the use of special food characteristics statements or
order to establish the. brand e.g. by the use of bright colors on the label. Other
manufacturers tend to copy already established product labels in order to
confuse the consumer. This suggested that product name was not enough.

Title: Food control : food safety in airline catering.
Abstract: Anyone who has flown on a commercial aircraft today, has come into contact with
inflight food services, yet few have an understanding of the processes that are
involved to provide wholesome food and beverages to the passenger. Few
passengers realise that the provisioning of inflight food services is a highly
complex task that is performed by a unique segment of the total food service
industry. In the airline industry, time is money and the inflight food services are
part of the race to meet the close time schedules characterising the airline
industry's concern with passenger service.
An introduction and explanation of the flight catering system, together with
information about the catering for special dietary requirements, is followed by
step by step procedures involved from the purchasing of food products to
dispatching the meals to the aircrafts.
With this dissertation the reader will get an idea about the basic procedures,
involved in the local inflight catering industry.

Title: Oil spills : marine disasters.
Abstract: Pollution may be defined as the release into the environment of substances or
energy resulting in deleterious effects. Effects can be, harm to living resources, hazards to
human health, hindrance to marine activities including fishing, impairment of quality for
use of sea water and reduction of amenities.
The study was focused on hydrocarbon pollution resulting from oil slicks, how oil
is introduced into the marine environment, its reactions and how it effects species. The
damage it could cause to human health is an important consideration. The study stated the
plans of operation that can be offered by the Maltese Authorities in case of an oil slick in
the Maltese Territorial waters. The study was mainly focused on accidents in the Maltese
Territory, the risks in the area, and the Mediterranean as a whole. It also showed the
relation between the international laws and regulations regarding marine pollution due to
hydrocarbons leaking out from vessels and what legal actions could be taken. Laws and
regulations were interpreted also as a prevention to avoid such disasters from happening
and what considerations are taken before ships are able to fly the country's flag.
