Abstract: This book is the end result of a project initiated by Lino Briguglio and John Kaminarides in 1984. The goal was to organize the International Conference on Economic Development of Small Countries (I.C.E.D.S.C.) in Malta. This objective was fulfilled on May 22-24, 1985, when the conference was held at the Imperial Hotel, Sliema, Malta. We would like to express our deep appreciation to the University of Malta for sponsoring the I.C.E.D.S.C. and to Mr. John Pollacco of Special Interest Travel, Malta, for taking care of the logistics of the conference. We are grateful to the authors of the articles contained in this volume. It is through these contributions that this book became a reality. A special world of thanks goes to Ed Nissan, who made useful suggestions on the sequence of the articles and the overall organization of the book. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the College of Business of Arkansas State University which supported the endeavor to publish this book by providing secretarial and typing assistance and the services of student assistants. In this regard we would also like to mention Mrs. Lynn Heustess, Ms. Janet Carnett and Mrs. Barbara Wallace, who took care of the typing, and lent a hand in other organizational details. Thanks are also due to the Macroeconomic Department of the University of Amsterdam, especially Dr. Hans M. Amman, for making available computer and other facilities for the typesetting of the book. Finally, we acknowledge that, unfortunately, we have no one to blame but ourselves for remaining errors, omissions and other shortcomings. 1989-01-01T00:00:00Z Preface /library/oar/handle/123456789/77050 Title: Preface Abstract: This book is the end result of a project initiated by Lino Briguglio and John Kaminarides in 1984. Until recently, relatively little economic research and analysis has been carried out on the various economic problems faced by small countries view of their size, but there now seems to be a growing interest in the problems, characteristics and policies related to the economic development of such countries. An expression of this change in interest among economists and policy makers was the successful completion of the First International Conference on the Economic Development of Small Countries that took place in May, 1985 in Malta. The conference was intended to bring together a number of experts to discuss the problems faced by small countries. The purposes of the conference, as were envisioned by the conference organizers, were: (a) to identify and analyze obstacles relating to the economic development of small countries; (b) to discuss policy implications associated with such obstacles; (c) to develop models related to industrialization and trade of small developing countries. 1989-01-01T00:00:00Z An overview of the book /library/oar/handle/123456789/77048 Title: An overview of the book Abstract: The papers presented in this volume deal with important issues related to the economic development of small nations. Small developing nations are not only facing similar constraints as large nations, but also additional constraints. Among these are inability to reap the benefits of economies of scale, dependence on narrow agricultural output varieties, large distances from main markets, shortage of skilled personnel, limited trading partners, limited capacity to raise capital, and a very high degree of exposure to what happens in the rest of the world. 1989-01-01T00:00:00Z
