This role is undergoing a process of evolution associated with the birth and growth of Maltacom p.l.c. This work presents a critical study of the unit's current standing accompanied by personal suggestions and opinions on the best possible solutions that should be adopted to enhance the library system. An important current feature is the expansion to the unit's functions brought about by the new setup of the mother organization. This expansion can be explained briefly as besides being a research centre, the unit should also complement with relevant books and documents all the courses undertaken by Maltacom's International Training College. By way of conclusion, this assignment will examine the present Documentation Centre in its three main aspects being first an organization hosted by another larger organization, secondly the work itself which is being carried out there and thirdly the personnel who work in the unit. Through such examination and criticism, a new library system will emerge, which will reflect Maltacom's view for the new millenium. Description: DIP.L.I.S. 2000-01-01T00:00:00Z Survey of branch libraries /library/oar/handle/123456789/98149 Title: Survey of branch libraries Abstract: The results of the survey that appear in this project report were taken from a selection of thirteen branch libraries on a cross-sectional criteria of the island. This was done purposely to examine and evaluate as genuinely as possible the situation that prevails in these libraries at different areas of the island. These libraries were surveyed in the four main features that affect mainly their failure or success namely staffing; building and equipment; stock and their use by the public and school students. The survey was conducted by means of a relevant questionnaire and visits which I have made personally. During the visits I saw physically what was declared in the questionnaire and spoken to sub-librarians to get a more clear idea of what they meant by their answers in the questionnaire. Although it was not the intention of this project to deal with history of branch libraries, I found it logical to let the readers of this work know at least a brief background of the development of branch libraries of today, so that they would know more about them and involve themselves even better into the context. Attention was given so as not to suggest any kind of recommendations which would be impossible to actuate. It has a very important role to play when it functions as an integral part of the total educational programme. A small study was carried out in four girls' secondary schools to investigate the present situation of the library. Questionnaires were administered to a sample of 491 girls, by taking a class from each Form (Forms 1 to 5) in the four schools visited. Data was also collected through teacher questionnaires, and interviews with the teacher-librarians and Heads of schools. 59% of the girls said that they make use of the library and they ranked reading for pleasure and looking up information the highest reasons for going. Their use of information and library skills was rather limited and incomplete. Each school library reflected its specific difficulties. The major constraints were related to staffing, accessibility, lack of adequate space and availability of funds. Resources include books, magazines and journals, but no audiovisual material. ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ Technology is still to be implemented and only one school library has had its holdings processed for the eventual networking with the central database at the Public Library. Nearly all students, and all teaching staff and senior management felt strongly about the importance of the library, yet it is still peripheral to much of the life and work that takes place at school. Some uncertainties have arisen as to the availability of funds. More cooperation between teachers and librarians is necessary if the library is to develop into an effective curriculum support agency. It is also time to draw up a clearly defined policy on the role school libraries should play in the whole teaching and learning programme if they are to become truly the centre of information and the hub of life in the school. Description: DIP.L.I.S. 1995-01-01T00:00:00Z A medical and pharmaceutical bibliography for Malta : an annotated classified check-list of texts illustrating the history of medicine and pharmacy in Malta /library/oar/handle/123456789/97982 Title: A medical and pharmaceutical bibliography for Malta : an annotated classified check-list of texts illustrating the history of medicine and pharmacy in Malta Abstract: This bibliography of 426 texts illustrating the history of medicine and pharmacy in Malta has been gleaned from many sources. It consists of: references found in journals, monographs and chapters in monographs. Most texts are available either at the National Library of Malta or at the Melitensia section of the University of Malta Library. A selection had to be made from the 800 or so references traced so far from various libraries and bibliographies. The selection criteria were such as to leave out all references prior to 1900, and those published in numerous local newspapers. These criteria limit, to a certain extent, the usefulness of this bibliography for two reasons. First because during the nineteenth century there were several publications giving personal accounts of the disease outbreaks prevalent at that time. Secondly during the past decade or so there has been a wealth of historical material published in local newspapers. However, it must be noted that all works published in local, and a few foreign, medical or historical journals have been included. The subject classification scheme is entirely my own. Within each subject heading works are arranged in chronological order of publication. An author index is found at the end of the bibliography. Description: DIP.L.I.S. 1995-01-01T00:00:00Z
