Building on Robin Alexander's work, it compares the five pedagogic cultures studied by Alexander to the one in Malta. Focusing on classrooms and the lesson, empirical data was mainly gathered through classroom observation. However, data was also gathered through a review of historical documents, recent documents issued by the Directorate for Education ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ and interviews with teachers and heads of school. This triangulation between and within has illuminated the empirical data collected and strengthened claims made. Comparative analysis of the data collected has revealed a pedagogic culture which is underpinned by a segmented-collective ideology. Its resonances with pedagogic cultures in continental Europe reflect the on-going influence of educational developments in Europe since the foundation of primary education in Malta. Traits of progressivism in policy and, to a lesser extent, in teacher discourse and practice could indicate a pedagogy which is passing through a process of transformation. However, teachers' resistance to recent curricular reforms could also be an indication of 'enduring struggles'. Description: M.A.COMP.EURO MED.ED.STUD. 2013-01-01T00:00:00Z
