There is nothing original here, for I have merely undertaken the task of producing a translation from an article in the "Gazzetta Sanitaria" originally contributed by G. Bruno, Director of the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Messina. Two motives have induced me to contribute this translation - the fact that this journal of ours should be supported by more student contributors, and the subject matter which is bound to be of interest to my colleagues. One day he complained that some time after he had gone to bed, he felt a burning pain in the soles and hands, which kept him awake for more than two hours and then gradually subsided. At that time no importance was attached to the complaint, similar statements being a part of the chronic invalid's daily report. I advised the patient to warm his feet and hands if the pain returned. The upset in sugar metabolism causes a general disturbance in the water balance of the body and leads to humoral and osmotic changes in the eye. 2. The long-standing presence of sugar in the blood, the failure of the tissues to use sugar and the eventual appearance of acidosis and ketones in the blood, give rise to toxic, and degenerative changes in all tissues, including the ocular structures. Nutrition is interfered with and the eye is more liable to infection and less resistant to sepsis. Mon, 01 Jan 1951 00:00:00 GMT /library/oar/handle/123456789/42497 1951-01-01T00:00:00Z
