It takes in consideration what C.S. Lewis in The Problem of Pain and David Hume in Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, along with other philosophers, have said about this serious dilemma. This dialogue between philosophers accompanies the reader throughout the dissertation in an attempt to find an answer to this problem. Finally, the branch known as philosophy of suspicion is considered as a way of viewing the answers typically provided for solving the dilemma between evil and a benevolent God. Reference will be made to the three masters of suspicion: Marx, Freud and Nietzsche, in order to bring out the view that belief in a good God, even when faced with evil, stems out of a hope for a better and happier life. This exploration unfolds by commencing with a linguistic analysis of the Indo-European preposition ‘with’ itself, where it is examined through semiotic and semantic accounts. After extracting from these accounts a series of characteristics about this preposition, this exploration takes a turn towards the metaphorical, analogical, and symbolic interpretations of ‘with’ to further delve into its modes of operation. Following this, we then proceed to explore the ontological ramifications of ‘with’ through the elaborations of Martin Heidegger and Jean-Luc Nancy, after which we explore the metaxological extents of this preposition by applying to this the formulation of mediation put forward by William Desmond. We end with an account of participation, which is a pivotal characteristic of ‘with’, particularly though an account of the operation of ‘with’ within the mediation of immanence and transcendence. In addition to the discussion on the connection between God's existence and the human person's suffering, this dissertation will mostly circle around a particular argument which is proposed in Eleonore Stump's famous work, Wandering in Darkness. Such an argument will be taking into account Stump's perspective which proposes that one's heart's desires pose an important factor within the compossibility of suffering and God's existence. As has been proposed by Stump, the human person's desires to fulfil his or her heart's satisfactions are amongst the main sources behind suffering. This dissertation will take into account that one's heart's desires are a necessity for one's flourishing, while also analysing how the very same heart's desire could also be the main cause of one's heartache. Throughout this dissertation, the argument of how each human person's aim in life leads towards being in union with God is hinted and also discussed how such aim is fulfilled with one being in complete union with God. The encounter, however, also confirmed that both of them had one common concern, namely the ‘derailment’ of the objectives of the Enlightenment whose goals constituted the ideals of the ‘unfinished’ project of Modernity. The absence of a mutually compatible epistemological foundation, however, does not preclude an ethical ‘elective affinity’ oriented towards practical outcomes. Description: M.PHIL.
