In recent years the economy expanded considerably, with the total labour force exceeding 10,000 persons. The most important differences between the Gozitan economy and that of mainland Malta are that in Gozo there is a higher rate of self-employment, relatively larger agriculture and fisheries sectors and a relatively smaller manufacturing sector. Traditionally, the unemployment rates in Gozo were higher than was the case in mainland Malta. These include studies by Brian Meylaq , and another by Sandra Spiteri. The study by Anthony E. Azzopardi also deals with these issues. This study consists of an analysis of a questionnaire sent to several hundred Gozitan students in their last years of secondary schooling, before they left the Island and became influenced by ideas in a wider context. A total of 428 questionnaires were distributed to students attending the Lyceum, the Gozo Seminary, Secondary and Trade Schools. A response rate of 93% was achieved. It is of interest however that over 100 students were not available on the day the questionnaire was distributed - that is nearly 19 per cent of the student population. One might argue that these students could have a different point of view from the regular attenders. The male:female distribution was fairly balanced. Il-lum, jum il-Vitorja, niftakru fi ġrajjiet ta' l-imgħoddi meta Malta u Għawdex kienu waslu fi xfar l-abbiss, u minn hemm ixxabtu lura rebbieħa. Din hija l-istorja li jafha kulħadd. L-ewwel nett, niftakru meta ħames mitt sena ilu konna mhedda mit-Torok, u rnexxielna nżżommu iebes bħal ġebla fit-tempesta. Niċċelebraw ukoll illum il-mitejn sena meta l-Franċiżi iffirmaw l-att ta' apitulazzjoni - dak kien fil-5 ta'Settembru ta' l-1800. Fl-aħħarnett, niftakru ukoll l-episodju aktar reċenti ta' l-aħħar gwerra dinjija ta' nofs sekiu ilu, li ħafna minkom għadkhom tiftakru sew. Għawnhekk ukoll irnexxielna nisgiċċaw mid-dwiefer tal-għadu u noħorġu rebbieħa. Mon, 01 Jan 2001 00:00:00 GMT /library/oar/handle/123456789/57984 2001-01-01T00:00:00Z
