Abstract: The issue of illegal immigration, although relatively not a new issue to the country of Malta, has lately gained in its popularity; it is in present time, one of the countries' hot issues which now, for more than a decade has been the cause for various debates, such debates being both foreign and domestic in nature. This paper will tackle mainly the domestic side of the issue, a concept which has also been carried out in much larger countries such as the U.K. and the U.S. where the conducted study will analyze the impact of illegal immigration activity within the Maltese Society. In this paper, a series of events will be portrayed leading to the current state of Malta's undocumented immigration situation, first starting with their arrival, detention and their achievement I rejection of status to the final stage of establishing a new community within the Maltese society. Being a relatively new concept for the Maltese society, various are the perceptions taken with regards to the presence of undocumented immigrants, leading one to question whether undocumented immigration contributes to being an increased source of crime rates within Malta? Consequently, how can any criminal activity be attributed as being an effect deriving from the incoming number of undocumented immigration? Any criminal activity, addressed in this paper, is any activity which infringes the Laws of Malta and could originate from any individual irrelevant of his/her race, skin colour, nationality, education and/or financial status. This dissertation attempts to review these theories with respect to the issues pertaining to schools in the Maltese Islands and the youths served by them. To this end, a series of questionnaires directed to both students and their teachers followed by respective interviews were designed and effected to gain an insight into the major causes of delinquency in these Islands and proposed ideas on how to deal with such behaviour. The methodology adopted in designing these questionnaires and interviews is amply discussed and the results achieved has been statistically evaluated and found viable. These results clearly show a direct relationship between educational aspirations, commitment to school, and school performance to the incidence of delinquency in Malta. School drop-out frequency and streaming have also been identified as major factors in predicting delinquency. The limitations of this study, based primarily on the time factor, have been delineated and recommendations for future studies to amplify and consolidate the results achieved have been presented. It is hoped that this study will be of benefit to Maltese society and to the identification of the root causes of delinquency in schools in Malta and Gozo. As often happens with cases of drug abuse, the focus is directed at the actual abuser while the family is cast into the shadows from which they only emerge in order to provide support to the abuser. The questions posed in this study are as to what the drug abuser's family endures as a result of the habit as well as whether or not the help and support they receive is adequate and timely. The problems tackled in this study include various types of abuse including physical, emotional, verbal, sexual and financial abuse as well as the treatment the family receives once the abuse is known. The study also deals with the trauma relatives go through when a drug abuser is in contact with law enforcement and the criminal justice system, including incarceration as well as dealing with the stigma attached to drug abuse particularly in Malta. The study tackles various family members separately so as to make a distinction between the different problems faced by different relatives. This study uses a qualitative approach by means of in-depth interviews with male and female parents, siblings, partners and children of drug addicts as well as interviews with professionals from drug rehabilitation centres in Malta. Using reference studies which were carried out by professional researchers in many areas of the oceans including the Mediterranean Sea I would also like to make people (especially Maltese people) aware of the illegal, irregular and unreported fishing (IUU) because a lot of people are still unaware of the enforced struggle that some marine life experiences due to these activities. My findings are focused specifically on the Maltese surrounding water that is the Mediterranean Sea and the Maltese fishing industry. Other issues regarding illegal fishing will be brought out during the study as every situation and act is linked with each other but the main aims are the following. • Give a clear picture of this criminal activity (inc. financial gains, illegal technique and motives) • The impacts on the environment • The impacts on the fishermen (livelihood, leisure) • Find out how this criminal activity is being tackled When this study is finished one should have a clear picture of what is going on in the Maltese waters as regards to illegal fishing including the illegal techniques that are being used, the fishing vessels which are being used and effects on the fish stocks. The study will also show how and what the governments and the Non Government Organizations (NGO) are doing to reduce these criminal activities including laws, agreements, regulations and the monitoring.
