Innovations in the organization of production in peripheral localities promise to create economically sustainable development if emerging firm strategies are harnessed and co-ordinated. Changes in transportation and communications, market conditions, the technology of production, and inter-firm relations are creating opportunities for depressed rural economies throughout the industrialized world. In some locations, these changes are resulting in spontaneous economic revitalization. In others, only a concerted and well-directed effort will succeed in seizing what may be momentary opportunities created by global economic restructuring.en_GB
