This work attempts to explain and justify the origins and continued existence of diversity in Law.

The forst part of the book introduces the phenomenon historically. It then succinctly describes the salient featuresof the principal legal families, as they exist today, answering the following questions in the process: What is of the essence of the Continental Systems? What is the strength of the Common Law Systems? What sustains the Sharia? What influence has Marxism left in the field of Law? What is the nature of Mixed Systems?

The author writes from a Mediterranean vantage point where many of these systems have come into practical contact making the comparison of systems inevitable, and of more academic interest.

The second part of the book traces the processes of harmonisation going on in certain areas of the law like environmental law and human rights. The book argues for the need of unification in other areas and the retention of diversity in others.
